When picking industrial conveyor roller chains, many buyers only check the model number and ignore actual working conditions, which often leads to early wear, elongation or breakage and unplanned downtime.
Here we list the main points for proper chain selection.
1. Confirm chain pitch
Pitch is the core size of roller chain. It means the distance between two adjacent pin centers.
Larger pitch chains can carry heavier loads, but they run with more vibration at high speed. Small‑pitch chains work more smoothly for light‑and‑medium‑duty conveying. Always match the chain pitch to your existing sprockets. Mismatched pitch will speed up tooth and chain wear.
2. Choose the right material
- Carbon steel: Cost‑effective, good tensile strength. Fit most normal‑temperature, dry industrial conveyor lines.
- Alloy steel: Heat‑treated for higher wear resistance. Perfect for heavy‑load, long‑hour continuous operation.
- Stainless steel: Anti‑rust and heat‑resistant. Suitable for food, chemical or humid, corrosive working sites.
3. Calculate working load
Do not only refer to the chain's theoretical breaking load. The actual allowable load must leave a safety margin.
For 24‑hour non‑stop conveyor systems, a higher safety factor is required to prevent fatigue damage over long running time.
4. Take speed and environment into account
High‑speed conveying puts extra stress on rollers and pins.
If your site has dust, grit, moisture or chemical splashes, ordinary carbon‑steel chains will wear out quickly. You may need surface treatment like shot blasting, heat treatment or special lubrication.
5. Check attachment requirements
Many conveyor chains need customized attachments to carry goods.
Make sure the attachments are firmly welded or riveted, and their shape will not get stuck on your equipment frame. OEM custom attachments are available if standard types cannot fit your machine.
A well‑selected conveyor chain lowers your maintenance cost and extends the whole service life of your conveyor system.
