Almost every user of roller chains will encounter stretching problems before expected service life. Chain stretch is divided into two types: initial running-in elongation and permanent elongation. The first type is normal and happens within the first dozens of working hours. But permanent stretch caused by wear, impact load or inferior raw materials will directly lead to tooth skipping, broken chains and shutdown loss.

Improper heat treatment is one of the top reasons. If pins and bushings are not surface hardened properly, friction will quickly wear down the pin clearance. This problem frequently appears on low-cost agricultural chains working in dusty farmland, as sand and mud continuously abrade the contact surface. Overload is another major trigger. Many end-users install chains without reserving enough load margin; sudden impact during harvesting or heavy cargo conveying speeds up wear sharply.

Incorrect matching between chain and sprocket also accelerates damage. If the sprocket tooth profile is not processed according to the corresponding chain pitch, uneven stress will concentrate on partial rollers. Even high-grade chains will wear fast with mismatched sprockets. In addition, improper lubrication matters a lot. Too much grease traps dust to form abrasive paste, while zero lubrication brings direct metal friction.

For distributors and importers, choosing reliable suppliers is the fundamental solution. GZG Transmission adopts heat treatment for critical components of all roller chains. We provide standard and custom chains for agriculture, motorcycles and material conveying, as well as matched sprockets. If you often receive customer complaints about short chain service life, you can send us your working condition and load requirement, we will recommend the most suitable chain grade for your market.
